This report presents fresh evidence on how Pakistan’s general sales tax (GST) affects households across income groups. By analyzing the distributional burden of GST, the study reveals its regressive impact showing that poorer households bear a disproportionately higher share of the tax relative to their income. The findings underscore the need for reforms that make Pakistan’s tax system more equitable, efficient, and responsive to social and economic realities.
